Steel Magnolias – four Stars (Superb)

It is not usually that a guy could get pulled into a film about a bunch of girls sharing their lives, loves, hopes, dreams, struggles and tragedies in a attractiveness store, but Steel Magnolias reeled me in like bait on a fishhook.

It’s possible it was due to the fact I am a sucker for romantic relationship movies that undress and expose our psychological strengths and weaknesses, and human dynamics as we interact with other folks.

Maybe it was because I am always so impressed by a film that sends a meaningful concept by capturing my heart, and then playing it slowly like a maestro conducting an orchestra.

Maybe it was an act of pure voyeurism to see just what a bunch of cackling ladies do and say when behind closed doorways, and out of the earshot of guys.

Or far better nevertheless, the overall performance of Julia Roberts who netted an Oscar nomination for Very best Supporting Actress as Shelby, and won a Golden Planet Award in the same class. Or the performance of Sally Discipline who was nominated for a Very best Actress Golden Planet as M’Lynn, Shelby’s mom.

Or the overall performance of Shirley MacLaine who was nominated for a Best Supporting Actress BAFTA Award as Ouiser Boudreaux. Did I mention that Steel Magnolias was filmed in Louisiana? In the little city of Natchitoches, a pretty setting that could easily get you back to rural The united states of yesteryear.

Sally Field should have been nominated for an Oscar, and Shirley MacLaine for a Golden Globe. They were equally that very good.

Let me not forget the extra outstanding acting performances of Olympia Dukakis as Clairee Belcher, Tom Skerritt as Shelby’s dad Drum, Daryl Hannah as Annelle, and even Dolly Parton as Truvy Jones, the beauty shop proprietress.

It was mentioned that after a inadequate take, director Herbert Ross reprimanded Dolly Parton and asked her if she could act, to which Dolly replied, “No, but it’s your career to make me look like I can.” You have to really like Dolly Parton she has no illusions about her acting capacity and nevertheless stays Dolly, really confident in what she can do.

Steel Magnolias was introduced in 1989 and written by Robert Harling, who wrote the play “Steel Magnolias” in honor of his sister who died after medical procedures. All of the fantastic acting in this film began with the great composing of Robert Harling. The play ran for 136 performances on Broadway.

This motion picture has been categorized as a “chick flick” but the designation does the movie a great disservice. The moniker ignores the great composing, wonderful path, fantastic acting and wonderful new music that make up the total presentation of this excellent movie. I was about a third of the way by means of the movie when I discovered the great musical qualifications by composer Georges Delerue it was spectacular and compelling.

Steel Magnolias runs the gamut of human emotions—from sheer joy to delightful comedy to sharp wit to grave concern and the tragedy of a mother’s worst nightmare. Through thick and thin, it transmits the significance of family and accurate close friends as a help group that females cannot do with no.

Shelby is actually the centerpiece of curiosity. It is she who is about to be married, and much of the early heading on centers around preparations for the thrilling ceremony. Shelby is also a diabetic just before we had insulin. Her mom wishes her to adopt youngsters rather than conceive.

Shelby opts to get pregnant, feeling that she “would rather have thirty minutes of wonderful than a lifetime of practically nothing special.” She seeks her mother’s help but does not get it. The ordeal that unfolds is heart-wrenching, but it is also why you really should see Steel Magnolias.

I promise you that if you are a lady, you will not get by way of this film with no laughing your heart out, and crying your heart out. Heck, I’m a man typically in complete control of myself and my feelings, and I virtually misplaced it.

The title to Steel Magnolias has been stated to propose that the main characters are delicate as magnolias but difficult as steel, even though the movie does not make it clear. The title reminds me of Aubrey Andelin’s guide Guy of Steel and Velvet.

This film and the characters in it are not pretentious. Trust me when I say that all of those names like M’Lynn, Truvy, Ouiser, Clairee, Drum and Shelby originate in the South. These are down home men and women, residing out their lives on their terms, not society’s.

Steel Magnolias is an outstanding movie due to the fact it answers my most salient query in watching any movie: Am I a much better man or woman for acquiring seen this film? In this situation, it is a resounding sure. Do not leave this planet with out seeing Steel Magnolias. Daily life is by no means straightforward, but it is satisfying.

My mother employed to say, “It is a wonderful existence if you can stand to stay it.” Gentleman, was she correct.

Examine a lot more of my movie evaluations on movies with a whole lot of substance, depth and feeling, including:
“A Xmas Story” – “My Huge Fat Greek Wedding” – “Secondhand Lions” – “The Chorus (Les Choristes in French)” – “Waking Ned Devine” – “Chariots of Fire” – “Steel Magnolias” – “Chocolat” and “Radio”
These are all excellent movies.
